There are multiple reasons why an email has not been received by an individual.
- Marked as 'junk' or 'spam' - emails are delivered but may end up in a different folder to the 'inbox'
- Soft bounce - email is undelivered
- Hard bounce - email is undelivered
Junk and Spam
The email may have gone to the junk/ spam folder. Here are some examples why an email may not arrive in your inbox:
-
Mailbox is full (over quota)
-
Mailbox is not configured correctly
-
Mailbox is inactive
-
Recipient email server is down or offline
-
Recipient email server has been sent too many emails during a period of time
If you find that an email has been added to your junk/ spam, it is worth contacting your email provider to whitelist the email which should prevent further emails from Sport:80 ending up in your junk/ spam folder.
Soft Bounces
A soft bounce is recognised by the email server but has been rejected by the individuals email client. This can be down to a variety of reasons, such as:
-
Mailbox is full (over quota)
-
Mailbox is not configured correctly
-
Mailbox is inactive
-
Recipient email server is down or offline
-
Recipient email server has been sent too many emails during a period of time
-
Email message is too large
-
Domain name does not exist
-
Email message blocked due to content
-
Email message does not meet the recipient server’s policies
-
Email message does not meet the recipient server’s DMARC requirements for authentication
-
Email message does not meet the recipient server’s anti-spam requirements
-
Email message does not meet the recipient server’s anti-virus requirements
-
Email message does not meet the recipient server’s sender requirements
-
Email cannot be relayed between email servers
-
Email cannot be relayed for unknown reasons
Therefore, overcoming a soft bounce will require the affected individual to investigate this with their email provider to identify the issue.
Hard Bounces
A hard bounce is when the email cannot be delivered. This is caused by either an invalid email address or because the recipients email server has blocked your email address. To overcome a hard bounce you will need to do the following:
-
Update the email address of the affected individual to a valid email address
-
Whitelist your email address so then your email can be deliverable in future
