Two Factor Authentication (2FA), also known as multi-factor authentication, adds an extra layer of security when logging in to the Platform. When you log in to the Platform, 2FA will send you a text message with a one-time passcode (OTP) which you will need to enter after you’ve submitted your password.
Is using 2FA complicated?
In short, no it isn’t. It will add a few seconds on to your login process, but it is well worth this very small compromise to improve your online security.
You will only need to provide your mobile/cell number the first time you set up 2FA. Beyond that point, when logging in you will need to simply enter the unique code which is sent to you via text message (SMS).
Why is 2FA important?
This second layer of security is very important. It protects against poorly constructed passwords and minimises the risk that an account is compromised as a successful login is reliant on a one-time passcode which is generated randomly via a different service. It will improve general digital security and also tick an important box when it comes to your security audits. Not only do we recommend using it on our Platform, but we also recommend that you use it whenever the feature is available on other platforms too.
Will we (as an NGB) need to use 2FA?
You will have the choice. If you would like to make use of 2FA mandatory for any of your roles we can help you to do this. You will just need to let us know which roles you wish to enforce this feature on and we'll make the updates for you. Each individual that holds one of these roles will be forced to enter a telephone number for 2FA next time they log in. It is definitely worth implementing this feature on as many roles that have access to sensitive data as possible. It is important that these types of users have the highest level of security setup on their accounts. Just get in touch with the Sport:80 team and we will work with you to ensure 2FA is mandatory for your selected roles.
**Update** As of July 19 2021 2FA will be turned on for all NGB roles.
Will our members need to use 2FA?
No, 2FA won’t be mandatory for standard members. They will have the choice to set up 2FA by clicking their profile image in the top right of the screen when logged in. We would always advise promoting 2FA to your members as a way to improve their online security, but this decision will always be yours.
